If there is one thing fans of complicated sci-fi universe are known for, it’s an amazing ability to make sure everything adheres to that universe’s “canon”. Now, while Mass Effect fans aren’t quite to the level of having made multiple levels of canon like Star Wars fans have, they have been busily cataloguing the numerous errors they have spotted in the latest Mass Effect novel. The novel, Mass Effect Deception, is written by series newcomer William C. Dietz who has taken a more liberal approach to the universe than Drew Karpyshyn who was responsible for the previous books as well as the games. The Google Doc now includes a helpful indicator of errors that the compilers feel are especially severe including a character “losing” their autism, two characters seemingly ageing impossibly and a timeline that the authors of the list describe as being “literally impossible to reconcile with the timeline made by the games, comics and other books.”
Dietz has not commented on the slough of inaccuracies and is likely to remain silent on the issue. Dietz is no stranger to working within established universes and has authored books set in the Star Wars, Halo, Hitman, Resistance and Starcraft universes. It is unfortunate that this latest book is now of little use to the hardcore fans of the series but it is somewhat comforting to know that Dietz is not involved with any of the writing in Mass Effect 3 itself.
